Fishing news from Donald Wilson.
The brown trout season started well in spite of the temperature and low water with several double figure Ferox trout taken by troll in the first week, notably 11lb, 18lb and 221/2 lb, the latter taken by Brian Lawrence and winning him a bottle of malt whisky from Loch Awe Boats for the best trout caught and returned in the first week.
Due to prevailing weather conditions there were very few fly anglers in the first week but those that ventured out were rewarded with some quality brown trout, the best being 3lb 6oz taken by Walter Smith of the Good Companions A.C. 6 boats by Cove & Kilchreggan A.C. had 15 fish (av.12oz) which is typical early season for Loch Awe in recent years.
The rainbow trout fish farm at Tervine in the Pas of Brander is in process of fallowing their cages this spring to prevent disease risk, hence only a few overwintered rainbows evident.
With the recent high water pike are now well into their spawning in the bays.
